Elden Ring: Castle Ensis Walkthrough

Castle Ensis is a "Minor" Legacy Dungeon located in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. It features a Remembrance Boss and serves as the northern gateway to new areas in the game. The dungeon is filled with tricky enemies, environmental hazards, and hidden treasures. This guide will walk you through how to reach Castle Ensis, what to expect inside, key Elden Ring items to collect, and tips for taking on its boss.

How to Reach Castle Ensis

Start at the Three Path Cross Site of Grace:

From the Three Path Cross Site of Grace, head northeast across the Great Bridge. Knights are guarding the bridge, but the real danger comes from a ballista positioned across the bridge that can deal massive damage and knock you off Torrent.

Tip: Dodge left and right to avoid the ballista's shots as you cross the bridge.

Arriving at Castle Ensis:

Once you make it to the far side, follow the road leading up to the castle gate.

Collect the Scadutree Fragment: On the right, in front of a statue, you'll find a Scadutree Fragment.

Activate the Castle Front Site of Grace: Just ahead, you can activate the Castle Front Site of Grace to set a checkpoint.

Defeating the Troll Knight:

At the base of the castle, you'll need to fight a Troll Knight to access the castle proper. Defeat it to proceed.

Castle Ensis Walkthrough

Room on the Right (Flintstone Sorcerer):

Upon entering, head into the room on the right to encounter a Flintstone Sorcerer, similar to those fought at Raya Lucaria.

This enemy isn't particularly tough-break its shield and deals damage while it's defenseless.

Collect the Shadow Realm Rune 4 from the corner before continuing.

Ascending the Stairs (Messmer Soldier & Dog):

From where you fought the sorcerer, go left and head up the stairs. Follow the path to reach the top where you'll find a cliff overlooking a waterfall.

To the left, there's a staircase leading to the castle wall. Here, you'll encounter a Messmer Soldier and a dog.

Tip: Messmer Soldiers can be dangerous, especially after they shout and buff themselves. Beware of their stomp attack-you'll need to jump over it to avoid damage.

Climbing the Ladder:

Defeat the soldier and dog, then climb the ladder at the back corner to enter an attached tower.

Treasure: Inside, you'll find a chest containing the Milady Weapon-the Light Greatsword, a new weapon type introduced in Shadow of the Erdtree!

Cave Encounter (Soldier & Dog):

Head back down to the cliff and continue through the cave at the top of the path.

As you enter the cave, you'll find another soldier and dog guarding the area.

Strategy: Handle the enemies carefully by killing the dog first, then breaking the soldier's shield defense.

Flight Pinion x2:

On the other side of the cave, you'll find Flight Pinion x2 lying in the grass.

Continuing Along the Path:

Ascend the path to the right, leading to another cliff. Here, you'll encounter some common foot soldiers gathered around a fire.

Tip: Ambush them and clear the area, then look to your left to spot a staircase leading to the castle gate.

Black Knight Fight:

A Black Knight wields a giant shield and mace to guard the castle path.

Dangerous Moves: This knight is formidable, with long-range attacks and some magic. He'll often use quick shield bashes if you try strapping around him and long-reaching swings if you back off.

When his mace glows, it signals an incoming magic ground attack (similar to Radagon's attack).

Best Strategy: Stay back, wait for him to commit to a long swing, then attack with a running attack or combo while his shield is down.

Loot and Tower Exploration:

Once the Black Knight is defeated, go to the tower on the left of the path, where you'll find a chest containing the Loyal Knight's Cookbook.

Further Progression:

Continue up the path the knight was guarding. At the top, you'll find:

Another Miquella Cross.

Another Scadutree Fragment.

The Castle Ensis Checkpoint Site of Grace.

A Somber Smithing Stone 1.

Message from Leda:

A note, titled Message from Leda, is found near the checkpoint. It contains information about reaching Miquella. This is a keynote, but we don't have access to that path yet, so keep it in mind for later.

Boss Fight: Remembrance Boss

Castle Ensis features a Remembrance Boss, but specific details of the fight are not covered in this walkthrough. To prepare:

Prepare for multiple phases.

Ensure your healing items and resources are stocked up.

Use the environment to your advantage-there may be elevated areas or obstacles that can help you avoid or mitigate attacks.

Tip: Stay mobile, learn the boss's attack patterns, and utilize summons if you're having difficulty.

Key Items and Treasures in Castle Ensis

Scadutree Fragments: Key items you can find throughout the dungeon.

Shadow Realm Rune 4: A collectible item after defeating the Glintstone Sorcerer.

Milady Weapon (Light Greatsword): A powerful new weapon found in the tower.

Flight Pinion x2: Useful items found after the cave encounter.

Loyal Knight's Cookbook: Found in the tower after defeating the Black Knight.

Somber Smithing Stone 1: A valuable upgrade material was found near the checkpoint.

Message from Leda: A note detailing the path to Miquella.
